LASOONA observed World Hunger Day

LASOONA: Society for Human and Natural Resource Development together with Welthungerhilfe observed World Hunger Day by organizing a seminar whereby civil society, farmers, women community and line departments from Swat, Shangla and Kohistan participated. Deputy Commissioner Swat-Mr. Syed Imtiaz was the chief guest of the event.

Mr. Haidar Ali Khan-Chairman Board of Directors LASOONA in his welcome address reaffirmed LASOONA’s commitment to working with development partners to improve food security, and ending hunger and malnutrition. He reiterated that LASOONA accepts the challenge and asked the civil society, to persuade policy makers and opinion leaders in government and aid agencies to implement the policies and programs that save lives, reduce hunger and promote resilience.

Mr. Noor Mailk Program Manager LASOONA shared with the audience objectives of the session and the purpose of observing World Hunger Day. According to him, basic philosophy behind the event is to create awareness among general populous and policy makers to play their due roles in eradication of extreme hunger. He presented facts about prevalence of hunger across the globe, national/regional and local level with particular focus on Swat, Shangla and Kohistan. He shared finding of the World Hunger Index and informed that Pakistan falls under the Serious to Alarming hunger category as at the national level 58% of the households are food insecure with 46% of the children are the victims of extreme hunger (stunting).

Mr. Khair Muhammad a community activist presented his story to the audience that how he has been supported through LASOONA’s food security program when his family was literally on the verge of total collapse due to hunger triggered by two consecutive disasters. Mr. Zahir Shah, representative of the farming community presented problems faced by the farming community to which the Deputy Commissioner Swat and representative of agriculture department reassured their commitment to solve farmers’ problems on priority basis.

Mr Daniel Rupp, Project Manager Welthungerhilfe (a German Organization active and committed to eradicate extreme hunger) explained government commitment to reduce malnutrition and hunger. He also presented various forms and manifestation of stunting- commonly known as extreme hunger in children. He also shed light on the Islamic guidelines of food and nutrition security.

The DC Swat Mr. Syed Imtiaz Hussain stressed the need to focus on improved nutrition for newborn babies and children. He also elaborated the role of parents and general public not to discriminate children on the basis of gender. If we live our lives in conjunction with Islam and pay Zakat in true spirit to the vulnerable, there will be no hunger and extreme poverty, he stated.  

Mr. Adalat Khan representative of Agriculture department expounded the role of agriculture department in maximizing production and resolving problems associated with agriculture sector. He restated that Agriculture department will continue its efforts with same zeal and spirit to provide amenities and technical support to small farmers.

At the end Mr. Azam Khan Executive Director LASOONA conveyed LASOONA’s pledge to work for the betterment of the society in general and vulnerable farming communities in particular. We are strongly committed to scaling up our community-based disaster risk reduction activities, along with food, nutrition security and livelihoods and that is evident from our current five years strategic plan, he stated. At the end he thanked all the participants of the seminar.

LASOONA affirms to be committed to the well being of masses through promoting ecologically sound developement in impoverished pockets of Pakistan in general and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa in particular.
