Inauguration of Irrigation Channel
LASOONA is implementing a project on Food & Nutrition Security in three districts (Swat, Shangla and Kohistan) of KPK. Besides other activities, Community Physical Infrastructure in one of the important components of the project. In this respect, an inauguration ceremony was held on the completion of Irrigation Channel in village Shanku, union council Chail Bishigram, Swat. The irrigation scheme as first priority and need of the community of village Shanko has washed away by 2010 flood and more than 300 kanals of agriculture land was left without proper irrigation system. Now, with the completion of this scheme, the agriculture lands will be used for vegetable and fruit production as well as for staple food crops.
A large number of people attended the inauguration event, including district nazim, tehsil nazim and naib nazim tehsil Behrain, village chairman and councillors, representatives from government line agencies like irrigation, agriculture extension, livestock and diary development, forest, police, and press & electronic media and community members from CBOs and civil society.
Mr. Mohammad Ali Shah- District Nazim, Swat was the chief guest on this occasion. He appreciated LASOONA’s Food & Nutrition Security project initiatives in the district, addressing issues of malnutrition/under nutrition and sustainable steps being taken in that regards by involving government relevant departments and local community organisations The district and tehsil nazims also committed for all kind of support from district and tehsil governments in implementation of the project activities.
It is also worth mentioning here that LASOONA has facilitated Shanku village in development of DRR Preparedness Plan whereby the locals prioritize construction of suspension bridge. After highlighting the need, the District Nazim announced construction of suspension bridge, which was washed away in 2010 flood. In the end, a formal handing over of irrigation scheme took place among CBO office bearers, LASOONA, and district government.
