Project Description

Swat District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa experienced severe flash floods and torrential rains from June 27, 2025. The catastrophic flash floods occurred during peak tourist season, with the Swat River’s discharge reaching 77,782 cusecs – classified as “very high flood” category by the Irrigation Department. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and other sources reported significant casualties, injuries, and widespread damage to housing, infrastructure and livelihoods. Additionally, as per Pakistan Meteorology Department and NDMA alerts more heavy rainfall is forecasted, indicating anticipation of continued flooding in the area.

The proposed 45-day project is designed to bridge critical response gaps in the immediate aftermath of the emergency, serving as a vital stopgap until longer-term recovery interventions are mobilized. Its activities focus on addressing the most pressing and unmet needs of the affected population, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most, when it matters most. The consortiumโ€™s readiness to act swiftly is strengthened by the operational presence of two locally embedded partners, each with deep social capital, fully functional offices in the target area, and teams composed largely of local staff who understand the cultural and geographic dynamics intimately. Strong coordination mechanisms are already in place with district and provincial authorities, providing a solid foundation for timely implementation. A rapid needs assessment has been conducted to identify and prioritize the most vulnerable groups, enabling targeted support in highly impacted villages and village councils. Over these 45 days, the intervention will help stabilize the situation, mitigate further risks, and ensure that affected communities receive urgent assistance while paving the way for sustained recovery and rehabilitation.
