Project Description:
LASOONA technical team conducted a detailed assessment in Tehsil Bahrain. In the assessed target villages of VC Satal, Bishigram, Shankoo, Bahrain and Madyan the flood damaged more than fifty water supply schemes to various degrees, whereby the source tank, main storage tank and main pipe line are destroyed.
In the assessed 56 damaged schemes, the main pipe lines in all schemes are completely damaged. Similarly, eight (8) water supply schemes require construction of water storage tank. While the rest, need rehabilitation of both source tank and main pipe line.
In majority villages the community collects drinking water from perennial streams and other open sources. In some villages the people reported to collect water from a distance of 2-3 km on foot. The respondent households average fetching time is more than 45 minutes.
The unprotected sources of water are the main cause of morbidity among the people especially infants and children of the area. Before flood the daily water consumption was 30 litres per person per day which has drastically decreased in post disaster, i.e. 10-12 litres per person per day.
Hygiene situation in assessed village is dismal and the situation worsens with each passing day. The hygiene condition of households living in far off hamlets is more distressing as water collection is a big challenge due to long distances. Washing hands with soap at critical times is not practiced by majority people, making them prone to water borne diseases.
In the hilly /rural areas the reasons of infectious diseases in women and adolescence girls are common especially menstrual hygiene management. Due to lack of awareness the female uses unhygienic practices during food preparation.
The project is needed to avert the humanitarian crisis in the flood affected areas of Swat. As per the meetings conducted with line departments like public health department, and district WASH working group and provincial WASH sector there is dearth of humanitarian support in the field of WASH especially rehabilitation of existing water supply schemes that are washed away in the flood water.
Project Achievements :
Hygiene promotion;
- Under the project 130 Hygiene promotion sessions conducted, 65 each with women and men beneficiaries in which 2,609 individuals (723 women,577 men, 490 girls, 631 boys, elderly women 92, elderly men 85 and 11 transgender) participated.
- 2,800 copies of IEC materials developed and distributed among the flood affected beneficiaries during the hygiene promotion sessions.
- 28 WASH Committees, 14 each of women and men formed during the project.
Hygiene and Dignity Kits Distribution;
- Under the project 500 hygiene and 500 dignity kits distributed among the flood affected beneficiaries that cater the hygiene and dignity needs of 7,000 individuals.
Provision of Safe drinking water
- 14 number of flood damaged DWSS restored under the project, that provides safe drinking water to 14,719 individuals (3593 women, 4,175 men, 3,330 girls, 3,621 boys 100 PWDs and 23 transgender).
- Out of 14 restored DWSS, 7 number are owned by PHED and 7 are communal, both were handed over to respective owners.
- Pre and Post Water Quality tests of selected DWSS conducted through PHED Lab.. Apart from Pre and Post water quality tests 107 HHs level tests also conducted under the project.
