Goal: “To transform the food system to prioritize sustainable agriculture, reduce hunger and malnutrition, and promote resilient and thriving communities.”

Sustainable Food Systems, as a thematic pillar  encompasses food security, nutrition security, and agriculture.

  • Food Security and Nutrition: The region faces challenges related to food security and nutrition, particularly among vulnerable communities. Efforts in this area have been focused on improving access to nutritious food, especially for pregnant and lactating women and children under five. This includes initiatives to enhance local agricultural productivity and diversification, as well as education and awareness campaigns to improve nutritional practices. Collaboration with various stakeholders, including government bodies, has been pivotal in addressing these challenges.
  • Agriculture: Agriculture, as a key component of food security, has seen efforts aimed at improving farming practices, increasing crop yields, and promoting sustainable land use. This includes training farmers in modern agricultural techniques, providing access to quality seeds and farming inputs, and introducing climate-resilient farming practices. These initiatives aim to bolster the agricultural sector’s resilience to environmental challenges and market fluctuations.
  • Challenges and Adaptations: The challenges in this thematic area are multifaceted, including climate change, limited access to markets, and the need for improved agricultural infrastructure. Adaptation strategies have involved enhancing farmers’ knowledge and skills, developing infrastructure to support agriculture and market access, and implementing policies and programs that promote sustainable and resilient food systems.
  • Partnerships and Collaborations: LASOONA’s approach in this thematic area has been characterized by partnerships and collaborations with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders. These collaborations have been critical in implementing programs and initiatives that effectively address the complex issues surrounding food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture.

Food Security

Goal: Strengthen Food Security in Target Communities for Sustainable Livelihoods and Improved Well-being

LASOONA aims to significantly improve food security in its target communities. This goal focuses on ensuring reliable access to sufficient, safe food by addressing the root causes of food insecurity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Through this goal, LASOONA is committed to contributing to the overall well-being and resilience of communities against food-related challenges.

Nutrition Security

Goal: Improve the nutritional status of vulnerable communities with a special focus on women and children through Nutrition-Specific and Nutrition-Sensitive Interventions

This PA aims to enhance overall health in high-risk groups by directly addressing dietary needs and indirectly through supportive environmental changes. It encompasses targeted actions like supplement distribution and broader initiatives like promoting sustainable agriculture, ensuring that women and children in particular receive the essential nutrients required for healthy development.

Agriculture (Horticulture, Livestock)

Goal: Enhance Resilience and Increase production in Agriculture and Livestock Sectors for Sustainable Community Development

This goal emphasizes building resilience against environmental and economic challenges in the agriculture and livestock sectors, coupled with a focus on increasing production. It aims to foster sustainable practices and innovations that not only boost productivity in farming and livestock management but also ensure that these gains are resilient to changing climates and market dynamics. Through this approach, the goal is to contribute to the economic prosperity of farmers and the overall food security and sustainable development of the community.
